Fat Tuesday Is Today. Your Body Will Still be Paying the Tab, Tomorrow.

Thoughts on navigating the bounce back of "celebration days"

Fat Tuesday is one of the most fun days of the year. Beignets dusted in powdered sugar. King cake sliced at the office. Hurricanes, hand grenades, and way too many Bourbon Street shots. If you celebrated, good for you — life is meant to be enjoyed.

Today is also the Lunar New Year AND the start of Ramadan (this evening). If you lived in eastern or central Pennsylvania, you might also recognize Fasnacht Day today. Worldwide, people are celebrating by feasting because this was traditionally the day to clear out all of that fatty food and alcohol heading into Lent or Ramadan.

But here’s the thing most people don’t think about: your body doesn’t get a day off. While you were celebrating, your gut, your hormones, your metabolism, and your energy systems were all working overtime trying to keep up with you.

And for people over 40? The “recovery tax” is going to be real — and it gets higher every year.

What Actually Happens Inside Your Body During a Big Night Out

Let’s break it down simply.

Your gut takes the first hit. All that rich food — fried everything, sugary desserts, heavy alcohol — floods your digestive system with stuff it wasn’t designed to handle in large amounts. Your gut bacteria (the good kind) get overwhelmed. Inflammation goes up. Bloating, brain fog, and sluggish digestion the next morning aren’t just in your head. They’re your gut waving a white flag.

Your hormones go sideways. Alcohol specifically disrupts your cortisol rhythm — that’s your stress hormone. It spikes when it shouldn’t, and drops when you need it. Meanwhile, your sleep quality crashes (even if you feel like you “slept great”), which tanks your growth hormone production. Growth hormone is what helps you recover, maintain muscle, and keep your energy up. Less sleep quality = less of it.

Your metabolism hits the brakes. A night of high-sugar, high-alcohol intake tells your body to store fat, not burn it. Your insulin spikes repeatedly. Your liver, which is also processing alcohol, can’t manage blood sugar as efficiently. The result? You wake up craving more sugar and carbs because your body is trying to refuel a broken system.

Your energy tanks. The combination of poor sleep, gut inflammation, and hormone disruption leaves most people feeling wiped out for 1–3 days after a big celebration. After 40, that window can stretch even longer.

This Is About Understanding. Not Guilt.

Here’s what 4Core wants you to know: we’re not here to tell you not to enjoy Mardi Gras.

Laissez les bons temps rouler — let the good times roll. That’s the whole point.

But there’s a difference between recovering from a celebration and never fully recovering at all. Too many people over 40 are walking around in a low-grade state of inflammation, hormone imbalance, and metabolic dysfunction — and they just think that’s what getting older feels like.

It’s not.

The hangover that lasts a week? That’s not age. That’s your systems telling you they need support.

The weight that won’t budge even when you’re “mostly eating healthy”? That’s not slow metabolism from aging. That’s your gut and hormones working against you instead of with you.

The energy slump that hits every afternoon like clockwork? That’s not just your schedule. That’s your body running on the wrong fuel.

The 4Core Approach: Four Systems, One Mission

At 4Core Functional Health, we look at four key systems that control how you feel every single day:

Gut Health. Your gut is your foundation. When it’s inflamed or imbalanced, everything else suffers — your mood, your energy, your immune system, your weight.

Hormone Optimization. After 40, hormones change. But “declining hormones” doesn’t have to mean declining you. With the right support and testing, your hormones can stay balanced and working in your favor.

Metabolic Flexibility. Can your body efficiently burn both fat and carbs for fuel? If not, you’ll always be on a blood sugar rollercoaster — and those post-Mardi Gras cravings will keep showing up long after the parade ends.

Lifestyle Medicine. Sleep, stress, movement, and mindset are not “soft” health factors. They are the foundation that every other system is built on. We help you get them right.

A Simple 3-Day Reset After the Celebration

If you want to help your body bounce back faster after a big night (or season), try this:

Start your mornings with 16 oz of water before anything else. Cut out added sugar for three days — yes, even the leftover King cake. Prioritize sleep for the next two nights like it’s your job. Add one anti-inflammatory food per meal: berries, leafy greens, salmon, or olive oil. And take a 20-minute walk outside each day to help regulate cortisol naturally.

These aren’t dramatic changes. But they send your body a clear signal: we’re back to taking care of ourselves now.
